TRAVELS I had a nice little trip recently across the pond. Though we were quite busy, I had an opportunity to visit one of my favorite places- TATE.  I discovered some amazing new artists, saw quite a bit of the Hockney exhibit, and of course had to visit a few old "friends". Despite the world of art one can see online, this is why seeing the real thing is important. As many times as I've stared at the painting below, I'm not sure if I ever noticed where a change was made. Near the front of the boat, the artist decided to paint over some blades of grass. I began to look at it differently and wonder if it would have made any difference to me. Aesthetically, probably not. It's a beautiful painting. But from an artist's point of view I began to think about composition and lines and where the gaze would flow. Hmmmm????! Where the blades were painted out. The weather was great and we were able to take a little trip to one of the first places m

As a female, I think I'm able to best convey emotion, thought, and narrative with the feminine form. That is not to say  I am unfamiliar with tackling the male psyche. Admittedly, the male figures in my works are often used sparingly-  not dealt with in any great detail or  only supplemental to the main focal point. The few exceptions are when I paint my husband (but rarely are these seen by the public). Recently, though, I was commissioned to paint a man. I struggled slightly with how to treat the subject. Should I go completely Gothic or dramatic like much of my work, or go with  a strong sketch or maybe just a simple value painting?... Well I tried a little of it all and below is the final result along with a few progress shots. Amusingly, the working title for this was "It Takes A Lot to Know A Man". I was listening to a LOT of Damien Rice during the process. It has since found a more appropriate title. Oil and Acrylic on Panel by Rachel Jones This is basic

This is a little view of my exhibit Silver Linings at the 2017 ArtFields Art Expo and Competition in Lake City, SC. As we speak, more is being added to this ever growing series. (More details on that to follow.)  Beginning April 21,  there will be an explosion of Art from all over the South East. It is definitely worth the trip. To all those participating and visiting, ENJOY and Wishing All the Best! http://www.artfieldssc.org/ Silver Linings ARTFIELDS 2017 Rachel Jones 😊

I suggested a while back to have a Forgery exhibition at a local gallery. Well that time has crept upon us. I considered doing various other pieces including  an Emin. In the end I settled on Alfons Mucha. There was a feeling at first of being a traitor not choosing a female artists. But love for this particular series transcends such issues for me. Moon and Stars is a wonderfully brilliant classic. It is delicate and passionate. Learning of its meaning and a little Mucha history was an added bonus. I've never spent too much time working on reproductions, but this walk in another's shoes was a joy. In this picture, she was still in the works and wet on my easel. However, the finished and framed (and dried version) along with many other creative reproductions can be seen at William H. Millers Studios  ( https://www.facebook.com/whimdesigns ) in Myrtle Beach, SC. The reception is this Friday, March 24, 2017, 6-8. Free and Open to the Public.  by Rachel Jones Mucha

VIBE Local art gallery William H Miller Studios is hosting the art show VIBE in Myrtle Beach, SC. The concept is that each art piece has music as its muse. It's already looking as if it is going to be a fantastic event with some of the pieces I've seen coming through the door. The two pieces I entered are below. One is based on SAEGLOPUR by Sigur Ros and the other was inspired by the song CATCH  by T he Cure (which has already been purchased by an early shopper 😁). This is a concept I've played with in the past with a triptych based on music from  Explosions in the Sky. So a project like this was definitely fun revisiting.  The reception, along with soundtrack made of all the entries, will be Friday, January 27th. It will be a 'happening' !  Hopefully I'll remember to take lots of photos to share.  by Rachel Jones SAEGLOPUR mixed media by Rachel Jones (fiber work detail) ♪ "She used to just stand there and stare

The Burn Happened this Weekend. You can check out 2 videos on my Instagram account in the  CONTACT section above. Follow the link. There were mixed feelings. I remember the feeling of having breakthroughs on certain projects, but they were just that..the beginning. I thought I'd be idle, but the burning did fuel a fire within me (no pun intended).  As the embers continued to burn, ideas came flooding and I spent much of  the next day prepping for new projects. So all in all, the cull wasn't half bad. the burn by rachel jones  https://www.instagram.com/p/BPQk2B9AOxX/?taken-by=rachel_jones_and_art

🔥 BURN, BABY. BURN 🔥 I find that holding on to some old art pieces isn't just sentimental but a hindrance  in moving forward.  They take up literal space and creative space. It is nice to see how I've grown, but I find myself wasting time that could be used creating and experimenting when I stare at them thinking, "Oh, Ill do this or that to improve it or make a better piece" when in reality, I just don't feel it anymore or I'm not in that place. So... It's time for a bonfire. Clear out the old...In with the new! by Rachel Jones ALSO.... quite honestly, I just like FIRE. 🔥
