A Story About A Painting

Let me tell you a little story...
When I was younger and could stay awake all night, a friend and I would arrange "midnight" picnics. It was all so very poetic and gothic in our young impressionable minds. We'd go to bed as normal (as instructed by the parentals)  then we would awake around 1 or 2 AM when we were sure all were asleep. We'd make cantaloupe soup, then sneak into the woods behind her house in the Lowcounttry amongst the fireflies to read poetry, dance, stare and the night sky and talk until almost sunrise. We would then sneak back into our beds and await her mother's call for Breakfast. We thought we were so very cool. Maybe we were, maybe we were not. But what I  know, is our imagination was out of this world. And we believed we were fairies and the jasmine scented magic of the night was ours alone... 
as long as no one found us out. 
 
This little memory was the inspiration behind this painting... "We Have Been Found Out".  Here are a few detail pics. But if you have a chance, see it in person at the juried show during this weekends'  Georgetown Art and Wine Walk.
It is one of the largest paintings I've done (and my husband says it is one of his favorites). 😉

Deep Dive

 I thought this would be a great opportunity to do a Deep Dive into a painting I recently finished.  I wanted to create a piece of art and a time capsule of  the things that currently occupied my mind during the process. Number One: The Macdonald Sisters. Margaret and Frances Macdonald were two Scottish sisters who were instrumental in the early days of the Glasgow School of Art. They make for a very interesting read.  There are many aspects of their process  I admire,  but I especially liked the painting on raised details.  By using QoR watercolor ground on panel, I already had an interesting texture.  I next wanted to take it to the next level in their style when they painted jewels and curves.  There was more originally, but I brought it back to what you see pictured below.  After all… I only wanted a "nod" not a copy.  Detail by Rachel Jones Number Two: Vincent van Gogh letters.  I love handwritten letters. We Fell Into A Wanderlust

We Fell Into A Wanderlust is a little series I’ve been  playing around with for a very long time. It acts as a muse in itself, mirroring real and imagined parts of my existence and those I know. Day Five! OK, I should not really be too excited about day five since I did not actually Paint today, BUT.....I did art related stuff. I've lost my voice (husband has smile on face) and running slight fever while coughing profusely. So actually painting was not an option. However, I managed to drag my bones out of bed for  a moment to deliver paintings to a couple of guys who asked me to do a mixture for their new offices http://www.rdytogo.com/ . They come up with great new apps and  recently even got to ring the NASDAQ bell! VERY talented young guys. These web designers and needed something to entertain their array of clients as they sit in the conference room. This is what I came up with and they were tickled pink ( my description and what a painter always wants to see when they are told to do "whatever it is that you do").
