Artist: Rachel Jones

“I’m not just painting a figure-
I’m painting about the figure”

Though born in SC, Rachel Jones has also called London, Norfolk, England, and Dominican Republic home. After beginning her formal training in photography, she later found painting better suited the aesthetic and language she was after. Rachel teaches workshops and privately.  She has won several awards, is a recipient of a SC grant, and collected nationally and internationally. Rachel Jones paints in oils and watercolors and relies on floriography, text, collage, and symbolism to complete her richly layered works. The works often feature figures interwoven with flora and fauna focusing on the search for belonging,  human complexities,  and the natural world.  Jones says, “There is far more that unites us than separates us.”

Rachel Jones is currently represented by :
Art Harbor Gallery , Georgetown, S.C.
Sunset River Gallery , Calabash, N.C.

Rachel Jones is a Member of SC Arts Directory

Artist Statement:
Whatever best suits the telling of a story is utilized. When Softness is key, I find I'm best able to describe it using watercolor. The transparent quality allows the ethereal quality I'm looking for. At other times, I need the weight of oils to best articulate the subject matter. For quite some time, small works have been at the forefront of my work since they are more intimate- forcing the viewer to get up close to the work. More recently I've been experimenting with a larger scale (or as large as my very small studio space allows). It allows for more breath within the space. Music, movement, and silences influence my work.

I also portray reverence and joy with figures and greenery interwoven. The narrative focuses on intercommunication and bonds through thoughtful use of expressions, positioning, symbolic plants, poetic text and collage. I use selective realism rendering some sections fully while leaving space for atmospheric abstraction. I paint real and imagined scenes as reminders of our dependence and reliance on insects, plants, forests and fellow mankind for survival.
