Rachel Jones and Art

 TRAX VISUAL ART CENTER  This is the follow up from a previous post about an upcoming group show in Lake City, SC at  TRAX , in conjunction with  Florence Arts Alliance  and  Artfields . As more information becomes available, especially concerning other artists and the opening, I’ll share it here. But for now… below is their little blurb concerning the concept and the four pieces I’ve dropped off waiting to hang.   “Often we are bombarded with external elements over  which we have no control. Our responses can at times be surprising, revealing, or even uncharacteristic. Frequently in works,  I try to reveal such pivotal moments (like film stills) of realizations and reactions to these events that may act as mirrors of our common nature.  The figures may appear uncertain, anxious, resolved or even confrontational- as the viewer anticipates  what is to come next.  I often use watercolor to capture the initial concept with as much precision as possible. Yet, to capture conflict, atmosphere, the passage of time and the needed texture, I have to stop being precious with the work and experiment with intuitive marks and different mediums. There must be a balanced dance between the light and dark. My endeavor in the end, however,  is to make sure the final strokes signify hope and resilience.” … So reads my artist statement for an upcoming gallery group show. Four piec...

 This is a little “potpourri” wall where some keepsakes, snapshots, and inspirations live. It is right next to my easel. I often put little works there that I think I’m finished with. As I work on something else, it’s in my peripheral vision. Sometimes it influences whatever I’m working on. Sometimes my eyes finally land on a problem area.   Here is... The Wanderer. The Wanderer by Rachel Jones Detail by Rachel Jones The Wanderer is currently available through  ArtHarbor  .  This weekend was my first outdoor event in quite some time. I underestimated the heat and humidity and nearly suffered dearly. I will be more prepared next time. There was something great about engaging with people after so much isolation time. Speaking with those who appreciate your art and hearing specifics about what touch them is priceless. Not to mention the  advice from seasoned veterans of the market. I did not get to do the live painting as I hoped ( heat) but next time. But I did get to speak to people about being available  to teach again! Workshops, private lessons, ZOOM.... Let me know what you’re interested in and what would be most convenient and I’ll accommodate to the best of my ability. Personal art lessons are a great gift for the person that has almost everything!  Isn’t  it time for you to ...

 Next week will be the first in person workshop I will have taught in over a year. It will be great to be in a room full of fellow painters moving paint around and discussing all things new. The theme will be “Approaching the Narrative”. Sharing our story can be enjoyable for ourselves and those who view our art. During my enjoyable watercolor whirlwind, I neglected to finish some oil paintings I began. With a renewed vigor, I was not only able to finish some (there are still others staring at me from various corners) but also start a new one I had in mind for some time. The final push came from the new   Alice Neel exhibition. Sadly, I will not be able to make that journey in person. But my old Neel books have been dusted off and just observing her directness is inspirational. I would highly recommend anyone who has the chance to see the exhibition to do...
